Spanish Medical Phrases

January 21, 2012 | No Comment |

Being acquainted with several Spanish medical phrases is quite important for daily functioning. You may even find yourself using these Spanish words and phrases in everyday conversations. They are really that important to know. Also, before continuing, you should be aware that these words and phrases are for the typical laymen to use. They are not very specialized vocabulary so you should be familiar with many of them.

Spanish Medical Phrases

“Yeso” means “a cast,” like the one you would wear if you have a broken arm or a broken leg. Casts are used to help keep your broken body parts in position while you heal. “Muletas” mean “crutches,” which are things that you use to help you walk whenever you have a broken leg. If you get a broken leg, you can often ask other people to help you carry your stuff. “Pomada” means “ointment,” which is a type of oil to used for medicinal purposes, like a salve or an unguent. Ointments can feel rather slick and greasy. “Gotas” mean “drops,” like when you have to deal with eye drops. Be careful when you’re using eye drops. “Jarabe” means “syrup,” which is often used when referring to cough syrup for when you have a cold. Cough syrups often don’t taste very good. A “curita” is a “band aid” that you use to cover over an injury whenever you get a tiny, open wound. You can buy band aids from almost anywhere. A “venda” is a “bandage” which is used to wrap around an injured part of the body. Bandages are for more serious injuries. A “herida” is simply an “injury” or a “wound,” which is the result of some sort of accident. Eventually, though, a “cicatriz” will form, or a “scar.” Try not to pick on your scar when it forms, though. You don’t want to irritate it anymore than you have to. And you certainly don’t want to get it infected by something.

That’s it!  Those are the nine words that you should know when dealing with medicine or health. You should also keep in mind the fact that the pharmacies in Latin America are not like the huge pharmacy chains in the United States. And many of the drugs and products that are sold in Latin America would require a prescription in the United States. It is even common for pharmacists to give visiting clients injections. These are just a couple of things to keep in mind when you’re traveling around or visiting Latin America.
